Mission Statement
My mission is to design an Islamic Cultural Center in San Francisco. The main purpose is to design a multifunctional complex for people with an interest in knowing about Islam during the time of the Ottoman Empire.
The Ottoman Empire was the last big Islamic Empire and one of the most powerful during the Islamic era up until recent times. The building will serve as a hub for social activities and will portray Islam as a strong cultural influence during the Ottoman Empire, especially, in an artistic sense.
The building will have a library, museum, cafe, and a space for prayers and lectures about Islam and its culture. Another goal is to offer people a place to learn and understand about this unique, hybrid of, culture and religion and it’s place in the Ottoman Empire in a hope to diffuse the sense of xenophobia towards the religion and culture.
Concept
Islamic aniconism is the term used to describe mordial dignity. The art of Islam is essentially a contemplative art, combined their penchant for geometry with existing traditions, creating a new and distinctive art. This art expresses the logic and order inherent in the religion’s vision of the universe. Islam is centered on Unity, and Unity is not expressible in terms of any image. Thus, Islamic art as a whole aims to create an ambience which helps man to realize his primordial dignity; it therefore avoids everything that could be an ‘idol’ even in a relative and provisional manner.
The concept is to connect geometry, continuity of patterns (algorithmic), with a dynamic/hybrid program (reminiscent of the culture san francisco); the light function that brings dynamic quality in Islamic architecture becomes the binding element for the two.
Advantages
San Francisco is ideal for this kind of Center, because San Francisco as a multicultural metropolitan city is iconic for it’s integration of many sorts of people and socio-cultural ideas. Already exists in the city a strong presence of other major religions eg. Christianity and Judaism amongst others; this last piece of the pseudo-puzzle would complete the already begging polity for a complete and balance hybrid society. It would be exemplary for San Francisco to have or show the World how open minded they are and with a Topic as sensitive as an Islamic Culture Center it would win the Hearts Muslims around the World.
The system of Islam promises peace and stability and another aspect is that the Ottoman Empire was rich with it’s literature, music and visual arts and that relates to the richness of the city of San Francisco.
The Ottoman Empire was fully formed as a system of belief with its associated intellectual, legal, and cultural attributes.
User Profile
Users of the facility will comprise, the numerous tourists in the Bay Area San Francisco, especially those with a curiosity about the diversity of San Francisco and then the Islamic World.
Another category of Users are tourists visiting San Francisco and the Site with the Contemporary Jewish Museum or the St. Patricks Church.
This new architectural edifice complete the triangle of the major religions and becomes a beacon for unity.
Site Environmental Context
This Site is chosen for its iconic symbol of integration for the three major religions and accessibility for residents and visitors another main aspect is that in this area are a lot of Museum.
The site is located at the Mission Street between 3rd and 4th Street in San Francisco, Downtown.
Locating the building downtown will not only to make it more accessible to the general public, but also with the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Saint Patrick’s Church at the same site it creates a point of integration for the three major religions.

Misyonum, San Francisco’da bir İslam Kültür Merkezi tasarlamaktır. Ana hedef, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu zamanındaki İslam hakkında bilgi sahibi olmayı isteyen insanlara yönelik, çok işlevli bir kompleks tasarlamaktır.
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu, son büyük İslami İmparatorluktu ve yakın zamana kadar da İslam çağının en güçlüsüydü. Yapı, bir sosyal etkinlik merkezi işlevi görecek ve İslam’ı özellikle sanatsal anlamda olmak üzere Osmanlı İmparatorluğu zamanındaki kuvvetli bir ilham kaynağı olarak resmedecektir.
Yapıda kütüphane, müze, kafe, namazgâh, İslam ve İslam kültürü ile ilgili konuşma alanı bulunacaktır. Bir diğer hedef, insanların bu eşsiz kültür ve din birleşimini ve onun Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndaki yerini anlamasını sağlamak ve bu din ile kültüre yönelik önyargıyı ve korkuyu ortadan kaldırmaktır.
Konsept
İslami anikonizm, ezelî itibarı tanımlamak için kullanılan terimdir. İslam sanatı özünde derin bir sanattır, yeni ve dikkat çekici bir sanat ortaya koyarak mevcut geleneklerle geometriyi birleştirir. Bu sanat, bu dinin evren algısında bulunan mantığı ve düzeni ifade eder. İslam, Birlik odaklıdır ve Birlik de herhangi bir görsel öğe ile ifade edilemez. Bu yüzden, İslam sanatı bir bütün olarak insanın kendi ezelî itibarını anlamasına yardım eden bir ambiyans yaratmayı amaçlar ve böylece göreli ve koşullu bile olsa ‘idol’ olabilecek olan her şeye karşı çıkar.
Konsept, geometri ve desenlerin devamlılığını (algoritmik) dinamik/karma bir programla (San Francisco’yu hatırlatan) bir araya getirmektir; İslam mimarisindeki dinamik özelliği oluşturan ışık işlevi, bu ikisini bağlayan öğe haline gelir.

İslam düzeni huzur ve istikrar sunar, bir başka önemli husus da Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun San Francisco şehrini hatırlatacak zenginlikteki edebiyatı, müziği ve görsel sanatlarıdır.
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu, entelektüel, hukuki ve kültürel özellikleriyle gerçek bir inanç sistemi olarak şekillenmişti.
Ziyaretçi Profili
Tesisin ziyaretçileri, San Francisco körfez bölgesindeki turistler, özellikle de San Francisco’nun çeşitliliğine ve sonrasında İslam Dünyasına ilgi duyan turistler olacaktır.
Bir diğer ziyaretçi kategorisi de, San Francisco’ya ve bölgeye Çağdaş Yahudi Müzesi veya Aziz Patrick Kilisesi’ni ziyaret etme amacıyla gelen turistler olacaktır.
Bu yeni mimari yapı, büyük dinlerin oluşturduğu üçgeni tamamlayacak ve bir birlik işareti haline gelecektir.
Bölgenin Çevresel Özellikleri
Bu bölge, üç büyük dinin mensuplarının bir arada yaşıyor olması itibarıyla bir sembol haline geldiği ve sakinler ile ziyaretçilerin rahat ulaşımı için seçilmiştir, bir diğer husus da bu bölgede çok sayıda müze olmasıdır.
Bölge, San Francisco şehir merkezindeki 3. ve 4. Caddeler arasındaki Mission Street’te bulunmaktadır.
Yapının şehir merkezinde konumlandırılması, halk tarafından rahat ulaşıma imkân verecektir ve aynı zamanda bu bölgedeki Çağdaş Yahudi Müzesi ve Aziz Patrick Kilisesi ile birlikte bir birleşim noktası oluşturacaktır.
